Dr Lawrence Howells Ma(Oxon) PGDip DClinPsy CPsychol AFBPsS
Dr Howells is a Clinical Psychologist, based in Norwich, Norfolk. He studied Experimental Psychology at Oxford University, graduating in 2001. Following this, he held various clinical and research roles in the NHS and at University College London. Moving to Norfolk, he studied at the University of East Anglia, becoming a qualified doctor of clinical psychology in 2010.
Dr Howells spent the majority of the next 10 years working in NHS mental health services, working clinically with adults in primary and secondary care across Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. He developed his clinical expertise with further training in CBT, CAT and EMDR, so that he could work with the wide range of individuals and presentations seen in NHS services. In 2014 he began working in youth services with adolescents and young adults, developing his own therapeutic approaches for this population and publishing books and papers (see the books tab) to share these approaches with others nationally and around the world.
In 2019, Dr Howells took up a teaching role at the University of East Anglia, teaching hundreds of psychological trainees over the next five years. His teaching focused primarily on clinical practice, particularly CBT and the skills necessary to deliver high quality therapeutic interventions. He taught on the CBT programme and on the Clinical Associate in Psychology and Clinical Psychology Doctorate programmes. Alongside this he delivered teaching to other professionals across the country through the programmes of professional bodies. His teaching has always been highly valued for its warmth, engagement, clarity and focus on what’s most important about the therapeutic interaction.
Throughout his career, Dr Howells has been focused on clinical practice: how to make sense of the difficulties people face in the context of their lives and then to support them to make the changes they desire. He has tens of thousands of hours of clinical experience with people across the age range, a massive variety of different presenting issues and differing degrees of severity and impairment. He has worked with individuals, couples, families, and staff groups. He is experienced in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR).
Dr Howells is a Chartered member and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS). He is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), accredited by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) for his CBT work, by the Association for Cognitive Analytic Therapy (ACAT) for his CAT work, and by EMDR Europe for his EMDR work.
He has been running Simply Psychology Ltd since 2014.
